Maybe it's just because it's a Friday night (and i've never booked an AE flight that wasn't as direct as possible), but under redemptions on AE, don't you just click on "multi city" redemption and put in NYC as a stopover? Or does this affect the points value and there's some other way, or am I just missing something? Doing my best here.
