If you don't then they could refuse to fly you and the consequences of that would be yours i.e. you couldn't claim IDB for example.

So as long as i am there and have dropped off my bag prior to 1 hour before the original departure time i am safe from all consequences?

Normally would aim to get there 3 hours before departure
