Other option, would be to look at an different Pacific Island. NZ currently fly's LAX-RAR weekly, they also have an SYD-RAR weekly service. So you could look at getting to SYD on UA. Or if you really luck it get an reward to AKL on NZ, then take an paid AKL-RAR flight ($200-400NZD) which some days it double daily.
