Do Airlines WANT me to use my FF#?

If miles are kind of like a currency, wouldn't (for example) United be happy that I credit my United flight to my A3 Miles & Bonus #? Like, "Sweet, the customer is paying me, and some other company is paying them in miles. Win Win!"

I assume they hold a value to being able to track their customers.. but I feel like they can do that anyway without the FF#.

I obviously don't understand the economics of this. So where's the flaw in my logic?
