I did a test... PHL to SAT, mid-January. FCM fee was as low as $114 each way. And, the fare was the same regardless of whether I was logged in under my SM number.
So, the FCM fee would cover the lost revenue for a couple checked bags, but the net increase in income for the airline is not impressive.
