Diamond status goes a long way towards this. I've done this a few times this year without any issues. Just don't wait until 5:00PM the day of cancellation. Call them as early as possible.
Call the hotel directly first. If they aren't flexible, call Hilton's Diamond Desk. They'll put you on hold and call the hotel directly. I've never had an instance where it didn't work.
