Yeah, I think I would be correct in saying its not unusual in UK/ Europe, they can "zip" the beds together to make a king. Some hotels in the UK advertise king rooms and put a note that they can be converted to twins.

Also, I would be talking about two single beds then which is more common here, I do like the double double rooms though.
