Having said that, I would consider getting one in this case (if they come with a driver) since that will be much less expensive than getting a driver from the hotel. Subway is convenient but eats up time, which you don't have. Taxis are easy enough, but if you have cash to splash, a driver is, to be fair, far more preferable and less hassle (as long as either they speak English or the guide does).

His day 1 proposed itin is certainly doable --even advisable-- on foot (after taking a taxi to the fabric market).

For day 2, it really depends on how much ground the "French Concession" part entails. I.e. if you knew had 10 spots that you wanted to check out between the river and Xujiahui, a car/driver could come in handy.
