Wait, where are you seeing AIT machines in precheck lanes? I've only ever seen it at airports too small to have dedicated facilities (e.g., SJC) where they give you a little chit that lets you use the metal detector instead of AIT.
If you're being forced into AIT in a precheck line, something is wrong.
