You should be able to do it but how easy the process is will depend heavily on the agent checking your bags. I had to do this a few months ago with SEA-PHX and PHX-EWR back to back (45 min connection in PHX thanks to schedule change) and I got all kinds of gruff from the agent in SEA about it. That said, she was able to do it and the bag arrived in EWR without problems.
