I've seen the same too for flights arriving back into the EU from IST, but much less frequently for flights headed to IST from the same countries.

Even leaving IST for various points west, TK and Turkish authorities too have increased questioning and passport examinations. I've seen this repeatedly too at IST.

The main thing they are stopping is refugees and asylum-seekers (and facilitators of such) who are desperately seeking a better life (for themselves or for others) after their (current or former) home country/countries were tipped over the edge by foreign powers and became such an ugly mess. The authorities are even obsessed about the passports of little children.
