I have also had success with getting a bag routed across two itineraries. In fact, only recently the airlines stopped routing bags across their competitors and different alliances. United should do this for you with no problem because both of the itineraries are theirs. There is a chance the counter agent for your United Express flight may not be trained on this so get to the airport early.
Assuming they can figure out how to do it,
be sure to look at the baggage tag when they put it on your bag to make sure it is checked all the way through! You don't want it going around a baggage carousel while you are boarding your next flight.
If you arrive in the Terminal 2 E/F gates there is a shuttle between E/F and C gates that departs from near gate E2A and arrives near gate C9 in Terminal 1. This is (almost) always faster than walking all the way around.
