Appreciate it is frustrating, but as has been stated before, your wife can contact BA if she hits 3,000 points after 8th April and I suspect they will be quite amenable to giving her GGL status.
Pure speculation, but I'd hope that BA may additionally grant GGL to important customers (say those dropping £50k and not reaching 5000tp), not just those that go to HNL a couple of times for £1000 each.
