Reroutings day of departure, by IATA convention, are the responsibility of the operating carrier, not the ticketing carrier. He might well have flown to FRA and let LH deal with it, and done better, with the higher frequency of short-hop flights.
Or at least he could've called LH directly and tried to have them handle the reroute over the phone? The few times I've spoken to LH agents at the US number they've been very helpful (granted, this was a while ago).
