I'm at full-service properties where breakfast is a Gold/Diamond benefit (Hilton, Doubletree, Curio, Conrad, HGI) about 50% of the time and properties with a standardized free breakfast (Hampton, Homewood, Embassy) the other 50% of the time.
For meals (dining alone) my company will reimburse up to $10/$20/$30 (breakfast/lunch/dinner) without a receipt (still must be on the company card) or up to $20/$30/$50 with an itemized receipt. Luckily the above mentioned limits are only when dining alone and are greatly relaxed when with clients or even when 2 employees are on the same check, but an itemized receipt and attendee list is always required.
As a Gold, at the breakfast benefit properties I would take the bonus points instead and expense breakfast (though about 50% of the time I still got both), but I would usually stick with the lobby/lounge breakfast regardless. As a Diamond, I stick with the free lobby/lounge breakfast 90% of the time. At free-breakfast properties I usually eat the breakfast as well 90% of the time. Even when I don't eat the breakfast, I'll take the coffee (and the to-go bag at Hamptons) out the door with me.
In most cases I'll use my expense-able breakfast allocation for coffee/soda throughout the day so I don't come out-of-pocket. On rare occasions I'll use my breakfast allocation for lunch and combine my lunch & dinner allocation for a really great meal, but I have to split the charges on the same card for this to work within our expense software (even though management is fine with it).
The handful of times I stay at Homewood Suites I'll also even at least check out the evening dinner, but I have had to pass on it about 50% of the time as it looked particularly unappetizing. I'll occasionally make a meal out of lounge appetizers as well, but not if I see they're not being restocked quickly enough for everyone to get their fill (don't want to be that guy).
