This was my first thought as well; it's nice that he speaks to us like adults and says that they tried something that was beneficial to customers, but it turned out not to be in the best interest of the company so they're not proceeding. No problem.
Contrast this with, say, United Mileage Plus, with its ham-handed announcements of "enhancements" that are almost always just spin in futile efforts to obscure changes that devalue the program.
