RR--I won a trip for 2 to San Francisco from the Starwood Win-The-World contest, staying at the St. Francis, United flights. (Actually, I won TWO trips to San Francisco in the Starwood promotion, but they would only let me keep one!) I have also won a deluxe trip to Paris a few years ago (from a local public television station), and two round trip tickets in the cont. US a few years ago (from Nissan). So yes, people do win these things.
