It was also useless because it didn't really matter to the Officers themselves. They are paid to work a shift. If they process 1 person, 10 people or 1,000 people during an 8-hour shift, the Officer gets paid the same. The only person inconvenienced is the person trying to make a living who gets stuck in line (if the lines were stuck). That person becomes an opt-out hater not a TSA hater.
What OptOut day and the ensuing outcry eventually led to was Congress telling the TSA to get rid of backscatter and the TSA ultimately coming up with the PreCheck system for screening those who fall for the extortion.
If that outcry had not happened, we would still be having naked pictures taken of us and viewed in a perv booth.
