I tend to do well by booking BE award tickets close to the travel dates. I'm willing to value them at $4000-6000, which is about the range of I (or B and upgrade) fares but I won't use the D/C/J fares to calculate value per RDM. If I see a good Z fare, I tend to purchase it outright if reimbursement rules don't come into play.
