What I do know is he has over 2mm+ lifetime BIS. I also know he is platinum. When I go into his account, I can see he's platnium. Hopefully that clears it up a little. Sorry for the confusion.
So, I can use his miles to upgrade my seat, that was paid for under my MP account? That would be great on my at least once a month trip from IAH-SFO and back. That flight is a bummer, back in the cattle car.
Yes, he can sponsor your upgrade with miles. And for a little while it will clear based on his status of Platinum, but that perk/glitch is going away soon and will clear based on your status.
As for looking in his account, the lifetime miles are meaningless except for giving him the lifetime status. These are not usable in any way. The number that would matter to you is the Mileage Balance that would have an expiration date next to it. These are how many miles that are available for use for awards and upgrades.
