This past Thursday, I was waiting in a parking lot near SFO for a friend to arrive and while watching the takeoffs and landings, I noticed that some aircraft had their tails illuminated and some did not. I know that the nose wheel light must be on during taxi and the wing landing lights must be on during the takeoff roll and on landing but does the tail have to be illuminated?
