It doesn't? I've been upgraded after SDCs two or three times this year, and I don't believe I've ever taken any manual action to put myself onto those waitlists. Certainly nothing at the airport.

Likewise, though it's always been on quick flights (SFO-SEA or SJC-SEA) for me.
