Cancelling flight for medical reasons

IF this belongs on a consolidated thread, apologies in advance and by all means consolidate it

I searched and noted a few cases from the past few years of questions and answers about Delta being flexible in legitimate times of need, and with some enhancements recently and the subsequent feelings, I thought I might just post a "goodun" I experienced today.

Vacation planned with my wife to HNL/LIH leaving this Sunday for a week+ --> booked with Chase UR (so not an award ticket), so to Delta a rev. ticket. Found out this morning from her doctor we should not be travelling next week.

(At one point on the ride home from the doctors, she wondered about our receiving points back for hotels etc etc... made me smile... she is learning :-

I called Medallion line and explained the situation - the CSR was instantly empathetic and knew exactly what the procedure would be and explained my options clearly after looking at our reservation.

She wanted the Doctor's name and phone number and city/state, I assume if they wanted to audit or sensed something fishy, they might check (with our permission given to our doctor I imagine to avoid HIPAA violations).

WIthout any games, trouble, hemming or "checking with someone," reservation cancelled and told I have 1 year from booking to change flight, but would have to call in to do it, and they would waive change fees for us both. IF new ticket was less, we'd receive an e-voucher for the difference, 1 year validity, dating back again to the original reservation.

Given that I was shaken a bit from the morning's medical information plus the stress of cancelling the various elements of an itinerary starting in 2 days, I was relieved and wrote notes down and really thanked and appreciated the helpfulness and empathy.

Now... not just a touchy feely post, there is an actual question.

Its been a few hours, and just thinking about my notes/conversation, plus other threads I'd read up on this topic... I think a point of clarification is needed for me (and hopefully others who search later).

This ticket was roundtrip for 2 DCA-SLC-HNL. As I remember our conversation, she said change fees were waived. Does this mean I can only re-book DCA-HNL? What if we decide to goto LAX or SEA or anywhere else besides HNL? Do I view this as now I have $xxx towards a Delta flight in the next ~10 months? Or is it only good on a new flight to HNL from DCA?

Let me know if I'm not clear in the question - its been a long day - and apologies for the runon post a bit.
