They can give out upgrades anytime between when you can first book flights until just before take off. They don't seem to do as many as far in advance as they used to. Sometimes you can see upgrades available even before you book.
My upgrades for LHR/MIA cleared four days out for this Friday. It was also wide open. Another FTer said that it would happen around 2 days before departure. I guess they gave up and realized that no one was buying.
