Yes, timing is everything when it comes to the makeup of other passengers. Fall cruises get tend to get much older crowds than Spring or Summer cruises, even on the short cruises.
If they cruise again, one thing I can say in Carnival's favor is that Carnival does vegetarian cuisine really well.
