I've read the terms for the card. It clearly says that:
"For the benefit to apply, the CitiŽ / AAdvantageŽ card account must be open 7 days prior to air travel AND reservation must include the primary cardmember's American Airlines AAdvantageŽ number 7 days prior to air travel. "
This implies that I can get the card now, for a flight in January, that was already purchased with a different card, and the benefit applies.
Asking here because it seems too good to be true.
Not too good to be true. You're not required to pay for your flights with the card to receive the benefits.
Just make sure you're AAdvantage number (which is connected to your card) is in the reservation at least 7 days in advance, as well as having your account open for more than 7 days.
