Indeed, it is a breach of Air NZ's terms and conditions. May also be a breach of the CAA Act as well - most likely regarding traveling under a different name. Just saying.

Problem with Air NZ fares is that with a few exceptions, name changes are not possible at all on deeply discounted fares - unlike JetStar, who will gladly take your money for a name change.

There used to be a few Air NZ tickets for sale on TradeMe (=ebay), but I understand Air NZ made some complaints.

Still, no doubt it happens. Higher risk of different gender, or perhaps being a status holder and looking like a student (there was a crack down on students traveling on Daddy's/Mummy's Gold status).

If caught, you are caught you'll be stuck with no flight and your friend risks having her account suspended/cancelled.

So, caveat emptor.
