1) We'd be looking to do the trip in business.
2) Apologies yes its Male so MLE.
3) Fully aware of the infant charge of 10% which is fine. Key issue is if we are starting the trip in JNB but routing back up to London en route to MLE, can we pick up our infant at that point (say after 4/5 days with the grandparents whilst we would be in SA). E.g. Can you add the infant for specific legs?
As far as I know, no, you'd have to include the infant on all segments, but how things would actually work out in practice I can't say. Presumably by not appearing for the first segment, the infant's overall ticket would be in question.

However, you also state,

This creates an unticketable itinerary, owing to the (relatively new) rule 3.2.1, to wit:

3.2.1 Africa-Europe-RTW-Europe-Africa

One of the visits to Europe must be a transfer without stopover between Africa and the previous/next continent. Travel may not include Mauritius/South Africa.
So in other words you could start in, say, Kenya, head to London then on to MLE, and then end back in Africa - anywhere except South Africa or Mauritius - provided the second pass through London (or the first) was just a plane change. But in that case, the price advantage created by starting the trip in JNB would also be moot.

It really sounds to me like you should give consideration to starting in someplace like Jordan, Israel or Egypt, eliminating the fourth continent, and still not pay too big a penalty in cost terms.
