If your rebooking is set up correctly (by the rules), then you can be rebooked into a mileage earning fare basis but still earn miles based on the original fare purchased, which would be zero in the case of award tickets.

I find in irrops situations like this, at least 75% of the time you'll be rebooked into a Y/J/F fare basis, but it's usually 50/50 whether you'll earn miles based on that or the original ticketed class.

Generally depends on the AAgent's skill, how it's handled in the computer, how much in a hurry they are, etc.
