It occurred to me the last time I changed my accent (to be less clipped English) was for the benefit of some Americans who were struggling to understand what I was saying when I annunciated middle 't' and 'd's! You would not think 'May I have a glass of water please' would be so poorly understood - but 'I'll have a wada' worked!
