Certainly in where I grew up in Canada, it was always "the States" and can't remember calling it anything else for the first part of my life and for the most part now.
Maybe it's a Canadian thing. "Going down to the States" is a very commonly used phrase.
As for accents I try to maintain my own to avoid subconsciously assimilating local accents, syntax and idiom.
