I flew to BKK from ADL a few months ago and the miles earned were a bit odd i thought. I bought a cheap J saver ADL-BKK via SYD and got 32k Tier miles for my troubles, but if i had booked the ticket from SYD to BKK it would have been only $10 cheaper and only earned 17K tier miles. That is a lot of extra miles for a short domestic hop.
