A number of airlines will refund in circumstances such as these, particularly given early notice like this. A simple, factual letter with a copy of the doctor's letter will be the best way to proceed. The people at the airline are human beings who will sympathize, but because some other people try to fake stories, the airline will certainly want the doctor's letter. OP can call the airline to find out where and to whose attention these should be sent.
My mother's done it successfully on UA. But I don't think it'll work with CX. For kicks I called my TA.
"You remember how you succesfully got most of our money back when mum bellyached before the UA flight two years ago and we produced a doctor's note saying she had GERD?"
"Yes"
"Would this work on CX?"
"Nah. Not really."
The letter wasn't fake and the doctor wasn't a letter mill. However I thought Mum was being a crybaby and the doctor didn't seem to tone it down.
