A number of airlines will refund in circumstances such as these, particularly given early notice like this. A simple, factual letter with a copy of the doctor's letter will be the best way to proceed. The people at the airline are human beings who will sympathize, but because some other people try to fake stories, the airline will certainly want the doctor's letter. OP can call the airline to find out where and to whose attention these should be sent.
