I have been to Africa several times and my favorite African country so far has been Sudan. It was a great place to travel. We hired a driver and car and spent two weeks camping in the Sahara and seeing lots of great Nubian ruins. That being said, Sudan is not a real "safari" destination. For that Botswana is great but fairly expensive. For what you are looking for, I would consider Uganda, Mozambique and South Africa.
