If it's Amex, they will give you a immediate temporary credit for the full amount paid on both tickets and then punt it back to AA and NZ.
That will get their attention pretty quickly and you can then argue from a position of strength.
AA got him to the destination he bought the AA ticket for
NZ got him to the destination he bought the NZ ticket for.
It's not NZ's problem if he missed aflight for a non-changeable/refundable ticket and he had to buy a new one.
Where is the argument for chargeback? He got what he contracted for.
Both airlines will provide data to the credit card company on the charge and the charge will go back to the purchaser.

To avoid the risk in the future you could buy a single ticket that includes travel on the carrier involved, or you could add connecting time, or choose an airline partnership where flights on different partners are ok if booked separately
I assume this wasn't done. Please correct if I am wrong
