My free advice would be that you paid what was owed in the situation and I would not expect any further compensation unfortunately. This is the danger of a short connection between two separate tickets. I agree that NZ charging you for a new ticket is rough, but I think that it is not unexpected.

The AA policy of protecting pax connecting to or from other OneWorld carriers on separate tickets is unusual IME.
