If you contact your insurance company, and explain BA have cancelled your flight, therefore you are looking at cancelling flight, hotels and any other costs. It may be they will allow you to rebook with other routes/airlines as the lesser of 2 evils.
I doubt it. The insurers will know that BA will pay out for the unused flights in the circumstances, so unless the OP is in an incredibly expensive hotel, I guess the insurers would rather stand the cost of this (assuming it's a prepaid rate) & recover the excess, rather than pay for more flights.
Wonder if the flights on the 28th are full of connecting passengers who are BA's liability, so they want to shift them first???
