It seems to me this is Phase 1. Phase n will probably allow paying with miles and some kind of NFC interaction.

I think that the team in charge of "monetizing" the customer should instead be put in charge of flight operations - then perhaps we can get back some reliability and actually have some value to earning miles....
Look at the bright side, all these new adventures will probably distract UA executives from coming up with more service and MileagePlus "enhancements"
