In the case of my local Staples they would not let me buy a VGC or a retail GC via MPX because it is technically a Staples e-gift card. I plan to go back, push a little harder, and ask them to give it a shot at the register.

A couple of other things: there are limits on how large of a purchase you can make via MPX. OfficeMax, for example, is limited to $20-$200 via MPX. That means if you were to buy a VGC for $206.95, assuming OM even lets you use MPX, you'd have to pay for $200 with the app and the $6.95 difference with another form of payment. An obvious PITA.

Also, be careful with the fine print. Staples via MPX, for example, is "currently not redeemable online." So heads up if you're trying to stack with online shopping portals.
