SJD to DFW is J1 Y4 so there are only 5 seats lefton the plane. Perhaps there is a conference ending on that day? Cruise line booked a plane full (and cruises don't typically reassign seats in advance).
Slight correction, but there are AT MOST 4 or 5 seats left on the plane. AA oversells flights, so it's likely less (or even full or already oversold). Also, one of those Y seats AA is willing to sell could also include the J seat they are willing to sell.
