That is not quite right. My ESTA had expired and I used the kiosk for my first trip with the new ESTA and all was OK. I think you do have to have been processed
through immigration with AN ESTA (fingerprinted etc.) for it to work.

I shall shortly have to get a new passport (and therefore yet another ESTA) and am assuming it would be too much of a stretch to be able to use the machine first time through, as my fingerprints are presumably linked in the system to my current passport. Does anyone know for sure ?
