Could be true but not on the only time that I connected on a trip from Europe to the US via YVR.

At YVR, I was not asked a single question! That never happened to me before. I then went landside for an hour or two then went through U.S. preclearance. There was nobody in front of me, nobody behind me, and only one customs agent. We talked about what I bought in Europe and how not only the packaging of breakfast cereal was different but the Kellogg's cereal was slightly different. After about a minute, off I was. The agent probably thought "some idiot....buying Kellogg's cereal in Europe."
