Unless you are on a tour that does Alice Springs, Uluru and Kings Canyon; you will need a rental car. This is back country so check if your car insurance allows taking the roads you want to take to/from Kings Canyon, and make sure it has the essentials in case you get stuck (large water bottles, rope, shovel, etc).
While I agree with the need to take spare water and food with you when traveling the roads from Uluru to Kings Canyon, those same road are paved (black top) the entire route.
My wife and I drove the entire route in a mid/economy size car with no difficulty (May '13). We did however avoid driving at night since the livestock (cows and camels) are a hazard at night.
