Meanwhile - to close the loop on one aspect of this discussion - I'll spend that week of January hiking Torres del Paine National Park in southern Chile. Shouldn't be nearly as warm.
Unless you are on a tour that does Alice Springs, Uluru and Kings Canyon; you will need a rental car. This is back country so check if your car insurance allows taking the roads you want to take to/from Kings Canyon, and make sure it has the essentials in case you get stuck (large water bottles, rope, shovel, etc).
