Maybe you can do a SDC to pick up the 500 miles. I had some flights from SAN-BOI. Some were routed thru SEA, some were SAN-BOI direct. I was able to change 2 of them to SAN-SEA-BOI, an extra 750 miles.
I don't know why you were able to SDC a change into an extra connection, but by rule, you're not supposed to do that.

You must keep the routing identical - meaning the same origin, destination, thru, and connection cities. Co-terminal changes are not allowed.
