Maybe you can do a SDC to pick up the 500 miles. I had some flights from SAN-BOI. Some were routed thru SEA, some were SAN-BOI direct. I was able to change 2 of them to SAN-SEA-BOI, an extra 750 miles.
If the price was about the same, I think I would route that way all the time for the extra 750 miles plus the potential to sit in F on SAN-SEA.
