Really, it's not.
FWIW there was a bombing on a bus today somewhere in Kenya killing 28 people. Very sad. I almost booked a flight to Kenya last week.
FT is tame compared to many places you could hang out. Like... Ethiopia for example. Just kidding!!!!!!!!!
Sabasi is presumably local (he's probably said several times where he's from, could even be a she, and I didn't pick up on it, but definitely has an authentic feel to his or her posts) and has a very different perspective on things than the typical FTer, who comes from the "West" and doesn't understand that it's not just miles that separate one place from another, but borders and customs as well.
Sabasi has said things that could have, should have, maybe did a bit, rub me the wrong way once or twice. He probably got the same vibe from me. Doesn't mean we can't find common ground. Ultimately, if we wanted everything to be understood the same way, we shouldn't travel. Travel is all about discovering the differences and, of course, the similarities.
Regarding bombings and Kenya and Africa in general, yes, it's a different situation than most of us are used to, but it's likely that, with what we see as "rampant" terrorism in some areas, there are probably more people dying in car crashes... or medical issues that would be routinely dealt with in the "west." But that's not your thinking at the time; you travel through East Africa and it's as interesting, for some, spotting all the Soviet & Chinese military hardware (mostly AK47 variants but you'll even come across variants of "Tommy" guns) as the it is the wildlife.
The local guides sometimes create an illusion that it's more dangerous than it really is, telling you not to leave the resort grounds without a guide to protect you. I'm sure there are areas that's the case, but not the places I've been.
I would definitely go back to Africa again, without worries about my safety. No side trips anywhere near Somalia though! Common sense will likely keep you safe and out of trouble.
