I'm completely wrong?
I am pretty sure that there is no such policy, but I would say that it is not too uncommon that they "forget" to collect the fare difference - especially for Gold and Diamonds already holding a Plus ticket.

On the other hand I usually ask at the gate when boarding is almost completed and in such cases I would definitely not have made the new flight if they would have to reissue the ticket in a new bookingclass and collect payment for the faredifference etc. Just for the record, I've only tried with Plus tickets so not sure about how it's handled with Go tickets.
