While I have a lot of concerns about the current administration's view on individual rights, I'm not sure that this individual wouldn't have had similar problems under any administration and regardless of 9-11. It seems he has chosen to adhere to a set of beliefs that makes travel difficult. That is a choice with consequences. The fact that someone chooses to believe certain things doesn't automatically make acting on the basis of those beliefs into something that is practical, nor does it necessarily require that accommodations invariably be made in deference to those beliefs. While I agree that it appears that the legitimate interests of the state could be adequately protected without a photo ID in this particular case, I also think that the individual bears some responsibility for insisting that his religious beliefs should be considered superior to any other considerations in this matter. That isn't necessarily so.
